The Asia-Pacific Initiative, in collaboration with the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), hosted the Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD) from May 7-10, 2024. Prior to the main NEACD meeting, a Defense Information Sharing (DIS) meeting was held, attended by security experts and government officials.

The NEACD brought together security officials, scholars, and experts from China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and the United States. The participants engaged in lively discussions on the security environment surrounding Northeast Asia, including U.S.-China relations and the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, with the aim of deepening international mutual understanding. NEACD serves as a 1.5-track platform where government officials and researchers can engage in dialogue in their personal capacities.

Alongside the main NEACD meeting, an inter-governmental meeting between government officials was held in a conference room at the International House of Japan. The U.S.-China government meeting between Liu Xiaoming, China’s Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs, and Jung Pak, Senior Official for the DPRK and Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, U.S. State Department who participated in NEACD, was also featured in U.S. State Department press release (see photo). It was a great honor to co-host a representative 1.5-track meeting on Northeast Asian security and to host an official meeting of government officials at the International House of Japan.
