The International House of Japan (IHJ) held an IHJ Policy Roundtable on January 30, 2026, welcoming Mr. Kyle Matthews, Executive Director of the Montreal Institute for Global Security, and Mr. Jonathan Berkshire Miller, Senior Fellow at the Macdonald\u2013Laurier Institute, together with additional participants from a Canadian delegation visiting Japan.<\/p>\n

The IHJ Policy Roundtable succeeds the Asia Pacific Initiative (API) Roundtable series, which concluded in December 2025, and is designed to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to engage in frank and open exchanges on pressing international issues.<\/p>\n

On this occasion, IHJ researchers and experts joined the Canadian delegation in a discussion on undersea cables and their growing relevance to hybrid warfare, as well as to economic and national security. The delegation also introduced key dimensions of Canada\u2013Japan cooperation and explored new potential avenues for collaboration in the field of submarine cable infrastructure.<\/p>\n

During the Q&A session, the conversation broadened to encompass a range of related topics, including tariffs and their implications for the Canadian economy and domestic political orientation, critical minerals and rare earth supply chains, shifting perspectives on international politics, and the upcoming elections in Japan.<\/p>\n

IHJ extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Kyle Matthews, Mr. Jonathan Berkshire Miller, and all members of the delegation for contributing to a timely and engaging discussion on issues of shared strategic importance.<\/p>\n
